Lane, Altavista, Virginia • Model 987-18
American mid-century design by Paul McCobb
Paul McCobb helped bring modern furniture into everyday American homes. Known for his adaptable Planner Group, he also showed work in MoMA’s Good Design exhibitions. These low tables have the slim legs and open shelves that give his work its light proportions. The original Lane Delineator catalog credits McCobb and documents this exact model. The photographed serial stamp dates that table to March 9, 1963.
Each walnut top has its own grain and tone, from golden highlights to deeper brown figuring. Mitered borders frame the two distinct patterns. At 15 inches tall, the tables work well beside low lounge chairs or together in front of a sofa.
Restoration and condition
Excellent vintage condition. Both tops were chemically stripped, carefully sanded, and finished with four protective topcoats. They are virtually free of noticeable surface flaws. Both tables are exceptionally sturdy, and the woven cane shelves are in excellent condition. Minor signs of age and use may be visible on close inspection.
